Sunday Open Gym: Handstands and Combo Research

Decent training session tonight at open gym. The things I worked on, along with my thoughts are as follows:

  • Hip hikes while balancing laterally on a rail trainer.
These feel super foreign to me, I definitely need to learn to control my hips better.
  • Worked on my handstands.
Feeling really solid lately. I didn’t go for time tonight, just did some presses and elevated presses. One handed success has been coming along on the right side, I just need to be more motivated to train my left hand as well…
  • Connected some of my basic vaults together, focusing on my transition steps in between.
I’ve been particularly enjoying my thief vaults, mostly because they are easy to hyper so I can take off and land on my non-injured leg. I also worked on dash vaults on my bad side, they feel a bit weird, so I’ll definitely continue practicing them. Some combinations that I particularly enjoyed tonight were thief [big wooden box] into front handspring roll-up [on a mini purple block]. That felt great because it was nice to incorporate some acro again.
  • Did a few step up side flips, purposely over-rotating so that I only touch my right leg down onto the ground into a roll.
I can do this pretty consistently and I don’t feel like there is a risk to doing this. Without the step up it might not be as consistent, just because I’d have to get a bit more speed and I’m technically not allowed to run yet, so I will keep these to a step up take off for now.
  • Continued to work on my Combo Project.
Essentially I have a numbered list of all of the low impact moves that I can currently do safely on a simple blue block setup (there are about 30 of them). The goal is to go through and combine them, seeing how many steps in-between I can take out. If I find a successful combination of two moves I write out the corresponding number combination. (E.G. 1 + 3, 6+ 1, 1+2). Theoretically, then I can start combining combos that start or end in the same move (so I should be able to go from 6 to 1 into 2). The only thing about this project so far is that it’s very tedious and time consuming to figure out which basic combos work together and list them. I’ve started going through and combining movement 1 with all of the other movements and I’m only at 18 or something like that, let alone going through all the 2’s, 3’s, etc.

Even though I worked on a number of things tonight, I did not feel very physically tired and my training was feeling a bit lackluster to be honest. I think it’s because I feel like I haven’t been able to really push myself and my body as much as I would like to since the knee injury.
